Taboo

in reply to: http://community.livejournal.com/atlanta/1622592.html

I for one am glad this issue is finally being discussed honestly.  My hope is that the trend continues, and branches into other areas of our existence as American citizens.

In my view the only reason we (as in our government) have overlooked illegal immigration is to protect the bottom line.  Our quest for higher profits ends nowhere, including gutting our country of everything good in order to appease stockholders.  Immigration, particularly from our southern border, means cheap wages and no benefits.  Wal-mart engages in the exact same practice so we shouldn't be surprised.

Furthermore, we've been egged along with the unattainable lure of superwealth.  It surrounds us.. the hummer h2s, the half-million dollar homes, the day spas, ect.  Our current (dysfunctional, destructive) economic system relies on cheap labor and complacency.  We've been laid off from outsourcing and restructuring.  We've taken menial jobs to keep what little we have.  Everyone is so busy trying to survive that we've not paused to realize what is happening to us and our country.

With so many jobs being cut what is everyone to do?

Hm.. well maybe we can go back to the basics, like farming or building houses.

Nope can't do that illegal immigrants to it for next to nothing and don't complain about lack of benefits.  They have our ER's for that, and since they don't pay taxes they share no burden in the expense of living in this country.

Illegals have shifted the fair market value of basic labor so far down that the average American wouldn't for a moment consider going into these fields, unless it was on a management level.

We're witnessing first hand an economic coup d'état.  Unfortunately few Democrats seem willing to discuss this issue honestly.  It's not as simple as we'd like to think it is.  Democrats have traditionally been pro-labor.  We don't even have labor sections in newspapers anymore.

My thing is we shouldn't view this through party lenses.  I'm not sure either party has this country's best interests at stake anymore.

Our country is being screwed on so many fronts.  Yet most of us are so complacent with our X-boxes, NASCAR and cable TV, we can't be bothered anymore.

I'm afraid we've allowed this immigration issue to go unchecked for far too long.

Disclaimer:  Those being persecuted for whatever reasons should always be welcome here, as well as those who wish to come here to better their lives.  The difference in this case is when people come here to work then regularly outsouce their earnings to another country, avoid paying taxes then benefit from our services.  That's not what our founders had in mind with immigration.

Lying liars

The escalating controversy puts farmers such as Dewey Zapka of Weld County, Colo., right in the middle, CBS News' Jennifer Miller reports. "Let them come here legal, quit chasing them [because we profit immensely off of the slave labor they provide]," Zapka said. "Let them be comfortable here while they're working [until they demand living wages] and doing our work [and using our services that they pay nothing for] that nobody else will do [for the money we're willing to pay them]"

Liars.
