Sensationalism

Why do reporters & editors have the hots for adverbs like "may", "might", "could"? It's so tiring to read things like "The World May End Today, says expert", "Obama Could Be an Alien from Outer Space", or "New York Might Slide Into the Atlantic, say researchers"
