The scooter A. mentions belongs to my ex-girlfriend, who bought it on one of her many impulsive buying sprees. She has nowhere to put it, so I foolishly agreed to offer it a "temporary" home. A. fixed it, and it ran for all of twelve miles before crapping out again. Not A's fault of courrse--it's a 1987 and was bought in a severe state of neglect. God knows what's wrong with it. One day my ex might return my calls and pick up her scooter and foist it on a new boyfriend. Or else it might just randomly appear parked on TOP of her car, grmbl grmbl etc.
A scooter is even more dangerous than a motorcycle. You're just as invisible, but you don't have enough power to accelerate away from danger. There are so many accidents where hitting the brakes won't help, but accelerating away will save you. Not so on a scooter. And the way they pitch scooters as something cute and chic that you can wear a skirt on is criminal. You want protective clothing on any motorcycle, especially if it's dangerously underpowered.
I will say that both are FUN. But a motorcycle is MORE fun. If A. posts a video of her jumping off a dirt mound, you'll see what I'm talking about. If you're going to spend money on either, just go whole-hog and just get a proper motorcycle. The stuff you have to learn to get the motorcycle license will save your life on a motorcycle OR scooter. There are also scooters with motorcycle power that let you sit in a scooter seating position instead of straddling, but you need a motorcycle license. Again, it's a good thing.
