heh. The chrome snakey thing is called an expansion chamber, and is part of the two-cycle exhaust system. The large section provides more low-end torque on what would otherwise be a very high-revving, unmanageable power curve on a straight pipe. Expansion chambers have to be precisely tuned for the engine and are very sensitive to the smallest change, such as a dent caused by a rock. Factory race teams run different pipes for different track conditions.
