Georgia opened the nation's first cellulosic ethanol plant near Savannah earlier this year. Production will be 20 billion gallons a year - no corn involve, no food involved - everything is made from bio waste in the paper mills.

Now if they would only open a station closer to town...

Cellulosic ethanol, eh? Sounds kinky. What's the downside of this seemingly free source of power?

Producing corn based ethanol is highly inefficient. That's been the big argument against the fuel.. that and using a food source as fuel creates other problems.

As a fuel ethanol is clean burning, gives engines more low-end torque, and slightly less MPG overall.

Cellulosic production uses greenwaste from any source.. wood chips, corn *stalks*, algae, even pig shit. Cellulosic is 16 times more efficient to produce than corn-based ethanol. If we migrate to ethanol we have to do it cellulosically or not at all. That's why news of the Range Fuels plant in south georgia is so interesting.
