Wow. You'd think these stupid Harly Davidson riders could at least afford a decent muffler. I want to cover my ears every time they go by my apartment building.
I know how you feel. We live right on a corner and people driving through this area seem to be under the delusion that this is a Stock Car Raceway. Noisy mufflers, squealing tires, jackrabbit spins from the stop sign. You name it, we got it.
I think Tacoma, where we are, is Seattle's Redneck Reservation. It's probably due to the military bases here. I've met very few people who didn't move here from somewhere else.
Living on Moreland (b/w Yacht Club and I-20), I was subjected to "loud pipes" every #$%^ing night. Some used Moreland as a motorcycle drag strip of sorts. I understand the "loud pipes save lives" concept as I've many friends among the enthusiasts and don't wish any of them ill luck. Still, I can't but wonder why they must indulge their passion to such great annoyance among others (esp. in a residential neighborhood). If I were allowed to drop a stinking load on each cyclist' doorstep,* I think we could call it even. Leaving that behind is one of the best things about getting rid of that house.
* btw, that is not a passion of mine. Just an example of a rough quid pro quo. ;)
haha ok thanks for clearing that last little bit up.
As mentioned to c_death I've been in two accidents on the street where cars hit me. In one of these (college avenue on UGA campus, going west towards lumpkin) the at-fault car driver said she heard me pass her a mile before she plowed into my back tire (at 35mph - I was sitting still). She had the nerve to complain that my bike was too loud as it went by and she *still* didn't see me sitting at a red light. the sun was in her eyes she said.
Even so I've appreciated loud pipes on the highway, as an auto driver. But I see no purpose or value in opening it up in quiet residential neighborhoods. Other than to piss people off.
Though, having ridden in Atlanta traffic, I wouldn't want a fully stealth exhaust on any bike here. I just wish they'd not drag race through residential thoroughfares with little more than straight pipes.
If I pulled the muffler from my diesel Golf, it would be only half as loud, yet I'd be pulled over in a snap. These clowns do it with impunity. Loud pipes save lives, my ass! Don't get me started on these guys.

Loud pipes are especially helpful on the highways but the difference between them and me is I never "opened it up" in quiet residential areas.
