The Alley Cat Opens It's Doors on New Year's Eve...
Underground: Six new nightclubs give jolt of hope for district
" The Alley Cat: "It's like the Playboy Club with some gimmicks," said Brian McNamara, general manager at Masquerade, the popular rock venue and club on North Avenue since 1989. It's his first shot at ownership. "The female staff will wear black vinyl hot pants and go-go boots. They'll serve the customers and perform Las Vegas style cabaret and singing numbers throughout the night."
The walls are exposed brick with rock memorabilia, pool tables and a stage for local rock bands. Bar food, tapas and sashimi are on the menu. McNamara is focusing on "the rock 'n' roll, tattoo/pierced crowd."

ok I'm probably in the minority.. but I pass on everything UA has to offer. I wouldn't go if they were paying me $15-30 in parking and entry fees.
I am friends with friends of Backstreet ownership.. According to them the entire reason Backstreets closed was because their refusal to move to Underground. They were asked by the City of Atlanta early on, politely refused and then the heat was applied.. still refused.. and so the City of Atlanta found reasons to close them down for good.
Besides.. I've never liked over commercialized alternative sub/culture and it seems that these new UA clubs stray further and further away from the very things that at least some of us value in alternative venues. I'm encouraged that clubs like Future finally have a home which seems to better fit their customer base.
Maybe now other clubs will emerge which won't feel a need to rely on fetish dancers, gourmet cuisine and dark techno to draw and retain patrons.
It's like the Playboy Club with some gimmicks
Will Atlanta ever get anything right?
