A trip down memory lane
Dec. 20th, 2006 12:14 amI finished watching Decline of Western Civ part III a few minutes ago. Over fourteen years ago I was walking the streets of San Francisico cold and homeless with less than $20 to my name. My hawk was faded green, the hair on the sides of my head was growing long, I hadn't bathed in two weeks and my car barely ran.. I sensed despair when I met other punks that night, the same way I feet after seeing Decline III.. Abject poverty, apathy.. no love, no art, no hope. As badly as I wanted to stay in California and play punk I had enough sense to realize what a poor decision I'd made. Fortune decided I would not stay in Frisco and through good will of dozens of people I made it back home to Georgia.

It was sad seeing how the scene degenerated in the mid 80s.. I discovered hardcore several years after that and wondered why people were so bitter and cynical towards Vomit Thrower -- it was all new to us, we'd didn't have any scene to copy nor did we have the internet.. but our path was certainly made smoother by thousands of bands before us. We didn't have the desperation of bands 10 years before us. We were never into aggression and violence for the sake of scene purity and image. We were just angry geeks with guitars, sick of jangly imitations of Shiny Happy REM and widespread panic, confused about our gender and sexuality, irritated by our parents, distrustful of America's established way of life.
