More on alternative fuels
May. 3rd, 2006 02:21 pmI spoke with a saleslady from Taylor Petroleum a bit ago who said basically Ethanol won't be here anytime real soon. Ethanol is a corrosive fuel and as such can't be transported via pipelines. It has to be delivered via train cars & special tankers, which are not readily available.
Also, E85 (and biodeisel) require a lot of energy to manufacture... more than burning oil outright.
The benefits come with cleaner fuel emmissions and SELF-SUFFICIENCY. Biodeisel and ethanol are made from soy or other plant matter grown by local farmers, and is processed locally. So by shifting from oil to biofuels we kiss Exxon/Mobile, Shell, ect goodbye. We no longer need to be so concerned with who's running which oil field.
Bio fuels create jobs in farming and production. They aren't so effecient right now, but that's more opportunity for college grads.. more jobs.
Archer Daniels Midland is planning to build a biodeisel plant in Atlanta within the next year. According to Taylor, ADM should begin offering the fuel in Atlanta by October (not sure if that means this year or next).
So the future is biodeisel. There is no reason why our government shouldn't get behind this.. but there is also no reason why a fox should guard the henhouse.
