Crazy idea

Reading this diary about Ethanol on DailyKOS feeds into a dream I've had of one day owning a small farm with acreage for a crop of sugarcane or switchgrass for EToH production.

When I was small my father bought 13 acres of property in Winder where we began growing okra for local markets.  He planted 3 acres of the stuff for several years in addition to vegetables used for our own family.  Of course I hated okra back then (and still can only eat it fried), but I always thought it was cool that we grew things that others needed, and made a little money at it too.  If I lived in a place with a yard I would certainly have a garden right now - I love growing things, especially vegetables.  I learned how to operate a tractor when I was little and sometimes help my dad with his when I visit him.

So yes the cats out of the bag now.. I'm a closted farm girl.

Who knows.. The latest study done on Ethanol production shows it to be a much more viable fuel than first thought.  There were concerns that production created more demand for fuel than the actual usage of EToH warranted.  But this has shown to be untrue.  Farm tractors can be made to run on ethanol now, so that would be a mute point for a cane or corn farmer growing for ethanol production.  So it's possible that ethanol could turn into a boon for our economy, could create an entire new industry with decent jobs and whantot.  If our government plays it's cards right we could even begin exporting the stuff to other nations sometime in the future.  Imagine that, America exporting something other than good paying jobs for a change.

Anyway - if I ever won the lottery I'd totally invest in property and set up a farm in south Georgia.
