so on top of a lousy day at work my windows 2k pc died.  No bootie. No bios, no display... it powers on for 10 seconds then turns itself right back off. 

ok enough of this sob story.   
i need sleepy drugs.

Sounds like a cooling problem.

Check the CPU heatsink to make sure it's still securely attached. Check the fans on the CPU and inside the power supply to make sure they're spinning. You might just need a new fan, or you might need a whole new power supply.
