While I do enjoy a lot of "genre" specific music, I am fascinated by interesting hybrids or fusions of different styles associated with genres.
One circumstance that your post reminded me of was how many bands fled the "goth" description years ago. It became saddled with the expectation that goth music was boring, poorly-played, and "over." The negative connotations that became associated with goth or gothic did slight the good bands unfairly, and it was curious to watch the process as bands more and more rejected and resented that label.
