Two months ago I was playing flag footie with the Emory's co-ed team. I'm not the most coordinated person and when I tried taking someones flag off my hand hit their hip, jamming my thumb. It felt like a sprain so I just let it go hoping it would feel better in a few weeks.
Well, two months have passed and I still can't grasp anything with my right hand. Forget taking off tops of jars or bottles, it ain't happening. Sometimes I catch my thumb on my jeans pocket and it hurts like mad.
So tonight I looked for answers. It appears that I have something called skier's thumb. It's a condition where ligaments at the base of the thumb tear, resulting in the symptoms I have.
If the injury is severe surgery is recommended, and assuming they want to perform surgery on my thumb, I would be in a cast for 3-4 months, followed by a month or two of physical therapy. For less severe tears physical therapy is recommended.
Arrgh. So no dirt biking for me anytime soon it seems. I've been riding twice since hurting myself, both times the soreness went away after I was on the bike for a bit. The last time I rode (a month ago) I decided not to ride again till my thumb felt much better. I was about to join a new band as of this Saturday. That may be put on hold too.
I'm making an appointment with the orthopedic specialist tommorow. This is such a bummer. At least I'm catching it now so hopefully I'll be able to be active again by mid-spring /early summer.
