"War of the Worlds" will probably be ok, but I wonder what the point is. George Pal made a then-modern day version of it decades ago, and for all intents and purposes, "Independence Day" was essentially the same kind of thing. What would have made it interesting would be if this version had been set in it's original time period - Victorian England. Still, I'll probably cough up the money to see it :)

war of the worlds was one of the first non-kiddie books I read but that was a very long time ago.. hehe. i'd forgotten where HG Wells set his story... so yes, too bad the remake didn't follow in those footsteps because well aliens in victorian times simply hasn't been done in a major production that i know of..

i'm not so excited about Charlie as i probably should be..the trailer wasn't that good. tim burton just doesn't compare to Gene Wilder.. although, I remember reading somewhere that Robert Dahl wasn't entirely pleased with the first movie's portrayal of Willy Wonka, that mr wonka should have been a darker less accessible character.. so maybe Burton's version will be closer to Dahl's vision?

Yeah - in fact, I think I read somewhere that the screenwriter had never seen the Gene Wilder movie, and that is why Burton chose him to write the script. That can be taken either way, but it would strike me as odd for a fan of Dahl's work to have not seen the original. On the other hand, if the reason he had never seen the original is because he isn't a Dahl fan, that can't be that good. Tim Burton generally makes entertaining films, I just wish producers would hire him to do more than just remakes and rehashes all the time.
