Catching my breath
Aug. 7th, 2007 07:44 pmI've been thinking of what to do after graduating from GPC (hopefully after Fall semester). Just graduating from college will be a huge accomplishment for me, the former high-school dropout. Unfortunately 2-year degrees don't account for much anymore. So I could rest knowing I've finally graduated and continue working in mid-level IT jobs (while they still exist) and hope for the best.
Or, I could pursue a BA degree. Earlier tonight I was looking at Clayton State's website, which is where I am leaning on going if I continue with my education. Their campus is very high-tech; it's set up so that everyone needs access to a laptop in the classroom. They used to supply them, but stopped due to complaints from students (who paid $300/semester in tech fees, and had to *return* the laptop). Now they just require that you own, borrow or steal one for class. Okay they don't say steal, but you have to have one.
So.. just letting myself wander for a moment.. If I enrolled at Clayton State I would most likely declare Biology as my major. I'm really not interested in pouring good money after bad, with IT. Since I have at least mediocre tech skills, a BA in Biology combined with my computer background might ensure steady employment and decent pay for a long time to come.
I've always enjoyed science, and I love being outdoors (if you haven't noticed - ha!). Well, I also love playing music but I have enough smarts to know better than to think I would ever make a living at it. Even if I were very talented.. there is too much competition. Anyway - science.. I work in a Genetics lab, so having more of that as a background seems like a good direction to go in. I also enjoy gardening and would very possibly enjoy a botanical and agricultural education. After all, I've dreamed of owning an organic farm one day.
If I continue on with a BA program I have a lot of work to do. I was amazed to see how many classes I have yet to take for a bare basic Biology degree. It's been forever since I had college Biology 101 & 102. Would I need to take these classes again to gain a fresh perspective? How many classes per semester can I realistically handle, with a full-time, demanding job? I mean there are a LOT of classes I have to take.
I wish I had this perspective 10 years ago when I was fooling around at Truett-McConnell in Athens. But hey, at least I'm finally tapping into an awareness that my future is directly tied to my education.
Anyway. Lots to think about.
Geez.. it's so hot outside. My heart goes out to those without a good education who choose to work in this kind of weather.. wow.

Dear God..
Aug. 7th, 2007 09:40 pmAnd then she sees Clayton State's tuition.. 6 hours = $1077.00
GPC, for comparison.. 6 hours = $608.00
What a difference. This has me wondering if I shouldn't just stay at GPC to take additional science classes? I have many lower-level courses to take.. so why shouldn't I just take them at the less expensive school?
Hm..
