Virtually all of the top-40ish bands/artists in any genre (even so-called alternative) are vapid at best. Once in a while something interesting happens like with Dixie Chix. But most modern music is vile, putrid, and without meaning. Even local bands get into the act.. they want to be signed. They write empty, heartless, "cool" music that rarely rocks the boat. Always fashion, always scene. No substance. My record is stained too.

Americans seem placated with sugar syrupy swill.

Unfortunately, in a music industry driven by profit, not passion, music that rocks the boat never gets airplay. That won't change until something akin to freeform FM comes along. Internet Radio, anyone?

There's enough vapid music here in Europe.. especially in Britain where every hipster and chav seems to be stuck in R&B/Hip Hop land :(

I pretty much agree. I've hardly ever listened to a commercial radio station since I was a kid. The only time I do is maybe a clssic rock station or when a NPR station has a blues/bluegrass roots music program on, that's about it. All of my music comes from podcasts or downloads since most of it is too obscure to make it to a top 40 station.
