Would there be a noticeable improvement in performance by upgrading from a Pentium D 2.6ghz to an AMD X2 4800+? I use the system for audio production and office applications.
I suspect you won't notice the difference. It might even get slower on some tasks. Most software is not designed to take advantage of dual cores. Increasing the RAM is the best way to improve performance.
Also if you use windows instead of a real operating system, re-installing the system every 3 months will help tremendously.
Tom'S Hardware CPU charts put the 4800+ about 4% faster than the 2.66 GHz "Smithfield" generation Pentium D for the Windows Experience Index benchmark for Vista, 10% faster for PCMark 2005 office applications benchmark, and 31% faster for the LAME MP3 encoder. I don't think the average end user will perceive a difference.
I would recommend looking instead at a 4GB solid state disk drive to put the Windows pagefile on instead.
