I know the ones that are in-dash typically use new DVDs every couple of years for updates. I imagine the portable ones connect to PCs in similar fashion. Alas? No - they do not.
HOWEVER - I know such as in the instance of a car I'm about to purchase, you can buy extra service (such as on-the-road traffic updates through XM that integrates with the GPS)...
