I, too, have back (and hip) issues... And my memory foam mattress is great! :-)
Get a fluffy mattress pad, though, so you are not sleeping *right on top* of the plastic foam layer. When you are right next to the rubber foam, it doesn't let your skin breathe, and perspiration that should be evaporating (and cooling you) is trapped. Like wearing pantyhose in the middle of summer... Double whammy... :-P
