My poor, poor calculator.  It also thinks I hate it.

I pulled the battery cover off this morning to discover four badly corroded AAA batteries inside.  They were stuck in place until I wedged them out with a knife.

My question is can I still use it?  There's a little white stuff remaining, but the contacts seem OK.

My Corrosion

The best thing to do is pop in some fresh batteries and just try it. I've had devices like remotes (who checks the batteries in these things anyway?) sustain a fair amount of leakage and was able to continue using them after cleaning them up. As long as the corrosion hasn't eaten into any of the circuitry, you should be okay.

Everything *displaced_hero* said, plus: Try a little isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol on cue-tips, to clean up as much as possible of the remaining corrosive ooze in the battery compartment... If left on the battery contacts it can continue to corrode them, even with fresh batteries in place. It can also impair the electrical connection between the new batteries and the calculator. And remember, the ooze is toxic...

What will the rubbing alcohol do?

Cleans just about any electrical contact... Should dissove any bad stuff remaining (and pick it up on the cue-tip) thus enhancing the survivability of tour calculator's battery compartment... It is neutral vis à vis plastic and metal and circuitry/components (provided you shut the power off before applying it and leave the power off till the circut wiring and components *dry* again!)... Also helps to chemically neutralize the corrosive properties of any resitual ooze that remains stuck in nooks and crannies of the device casing in spite of your best efforts... :-)
